Android™ delivers a complete set of software for mobile devices: an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications.

Android was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer. It was built to be truly open. For example, an application can call upon any of the phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users. Android is built on the open Linux Kernel. Furthermore, it utilizes a custom virtual machine that was designed to optimize memory and hardware resources in a mobile environment. Android is open source; it can be liberally extended to incorporate new cutting edge technologies as they emerge. The platform will continue to evolve as the developer community works together to build innovative mobile applications.

Android does not differentiate between the phone’s core applications and third-party applications. They can all be built to have equal access to a phone’s capabilities providing users with a broad spectrum of applications and services. With devices built on the Android Platform, users are able to fully tailor the phone to their interests. They can swap out the phone’s homescreen, the style of the dialer, or any of the applications. They can even instruct their phones to use their favorite photo viewing application to handle the viewing of all photos.

Android breaks down the barriers to building new and innovative applications. For example, a developer can combine information from the web with data on an individual’s mobile phone — such as the user’s contacts, calendar, or geographic location — to provide a more relevant user experience. With Android, a developer can build an application that enables users to view the location of their friends and be alerted when they are in the vicinity giving them a chance to connect.

Android provides access to a wide range of useful libraries and tools that can be used to build rich applications. For example, Android enables developers to obtain the location of the device, and allows devices to communicate with one another enabling rich peer-to-peer social applications. In addition, Android includes a full set of tools that have been built from the ground up alongside the platform providing developers with high productivity and deep insight into their applications.

Apple’s Director of Engineering of Unix Technologies Jordan Hubbard spoke at LISA ‘08 last week. LISA (or Large Installation System Administration Conference) is a technical conference targeted at engineers and system administrators. This year’s conference invited Apple’s Jordan Hubbard to speak about the evolution of Mac OS X from large servers to embedded platforms. While technical readers may find the content of Hubbard’s presentation slides (PDF) quite interesting, the most surprising revelation is a more specific target date for Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard): 1st Quarter 2009.

When Apple first previewed Snow Leopard at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2008, they simply stated that Snow Leopard would ship «in about a year» from the announcement. A Q1 release would deliver it earlier than most had expected and makes it conceivable that we could see a demo or announcement at Macworld San Francisco 2009.

Apple has said that they would be focusing on both quality and performance in Snow Leopard. In particular, Apple has made it clear that there will be efforts to improve support for multi-core processors and GPU processing. These improvements will help developers more efficiently use these capabilities that already ship in Macs.

It seems that there are some people who believe that we might see netbooks running the newly-introduced Cloud OS, developed by Good OS, at CES next month. The new operating system is said to be able to allow users to access simple applications, like Google Apps, in a browser. The company is the developer of the OS used on the sub-$200 desktop PCs sold at Wal-Mart. According to it, its solution is able to leverage the performance levels of operating systems for portable PCs, including Linux and Windows XP, yet it stays away from Vista.

Basically, the Cloud comes as a compressed edition of Linux with a browser built by Good and meant to be used in the netbook environment. The browser enables users to access lightweight Web applications, like Google Apps or Yahoo Mail. Moreover, the OC features support for Internet media formats including Flash for video sites similar to YouTube and MP3 for music downloads. In addition, the OS allows users to load Linux or Windows XP, without the hassle of rebooting. Through a single click in the browser they can switch to either Linux or XP, or turn off the machine.

Evermax’s Everex PC2512 gPC, the latest version of a Good-enabled desktop PC, comes with bundled applications, like the Linux-based OpenOffice.org productivity suite, the Skype voice over IP (VoIP), the RhythmBox music management, the Xing audio player, and GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). In addition, the PC also offers direct links to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Google Product Search, Blogger, YouTube, and Google Maps.

The Linux-based desktop machine costs under $200, and features a 1.5 GHz Via C7-D processor, 512 MB of RAM, an 80 GB hard drive, a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, as well as stereo speakers. The machine allows users to upgrade the memory to 2GB, yet there is no monitor included in the package. Good announced on its site that it planned to work with OEM partners to pack its Cloud OS with features for netbooks. The Cloud would allow PC makers to pre-load it on to the PC hard drive, solid state drive, on-board flash storage, or on CD for end-users to install. The operating system would also come with a range of recovery methods using either CD or hidden partitions.

The company also says that the Cloud could be set up to boot into specific applications, like Skype, instead of entering a Web page. Word on the web has it that netbooks that would feature the new Cloud OS could be spotted at CES next month, although it hasn’t been confirmed by the company yet.

The coverage of RIM’s purchase of QNX has left me whistling a long-forgotten hit from the Grits, albeit with a slightly different text. It gores: “its times like these which make me say, normal journalists shouldn’t cover mobile, he he”. Jokes aside: RIM’s purchase of QNX has absolutely, 100% nothing to do with cars.

But let’s go at this step-by-step. I am aware that RIM’s boss talked about cars in the initial press release. I am furthermore aware that tying up cars with your phone is a cool idea. But this is not the reason – QNX has something RIM desperately needs: a real operating system!

If you look at the development environment for the BlackBerry IOS today, you see J2ME applets. J2ME applets, just like the ones which were made popular on Siemens’s infamous MT50 phone approximately 10 years ago. It is – even today – not possible to create native applications for the BlackBerry as a third party.

As I do not have access to the internals of the OS, I can but speculate…but I personally think that the operating system is not able to provide a safe execution environment for third party applications. Safe execution environment meaning to keep them apart from one another, and to keep them away from the network.

QNX, on the other hand, is just that. Its operating system is real-time-capable, which means that it satisfies the highest requirements imaginable. It furthermore is frugal with resources – and thus makes an ideal “kernel” for a next-generation operating system.

I wouldn’t wonder if we see a native application programming interface in the next two years – if it ever happens, keep in mind that you heard it here first…

It is not uncommon for a patron to suggest that we purchase a particular book or DVD, but patrons seldom go out of their way to ask that we host a particular program. However, a few months ago, a local resident who – I must admit, is not a frequent library user – took the time to contact me about a topic he believes is important for our community.

The topic is healthy eating. At first I thought the public might already be saturated by movies and books about the subject. Wanting to learn more, I tried to request the recent movie “Food, Inc.” from another library. To my surprise, I found that several other patrons were waiting to see the movie. In fact, within the Onondaga County and Finger Lakes Library systems, there were 165 requests when I tried to place a hold on it. Clearly, people throughout central New York are interested in healthy eating, just like our patron who asked for a program.

Patron-initiated programming is evidence that the public has come to see libraries as more than a place to get books, music or movies. Programming has become a vital part of library service. They go beyond preschool story hours, book discussions and reading advocacy workshops.

Libraries are an institution of our democracy where residents can reach out to others in their community to share knowledge and concerns. Topics range from fly-fishing to the history of the Underground Railroad and everything in between. Best of all, most programs are free of charge or minimal in cost to patrons. A list of events at local libraries can often be found in the newspaper, on their Web sites and on posters displayed in the area.

Finding and funding popular events can be challenging for libraries today. Many are made possible through state grants and support by community organizations. The New York Humanities Council has traditionally been a source of free programs, however, like many organizations, they are facing drastic funding cuts from the state. As a result, libraries must look to their communities for help.

Luckily, Cayuga County has several knowledgeable and skilled residents who present programs for a small fee or sometimes free of charge. Finding them can be difficult and is usually achieved by word-of-mouth. For professional performers, libraries can use the Performers and Programs database. The Web-based resource is the result of a statewide collaboration of public library systems in New York and was initially funded by funds from the Library Service and Technology Act. Performers are encouraged to sign up in order to make the database even more useful.

Thanks to funding from the Cato Rotary and the simple request from a concerned resident, the Lang Memorial Library in Cato will present the movie “Fresh” and host a discussion on healthy eating alternatives. As important as the program itself is the knowledge that libraries are committed to helping the residents who regularly use the library, and those who are there infrequently, thus making their communities a better place to live for everyone.

Libbie Messina is a librarian at Stewart Lang Memorial Library in Cato
